The Circus Leaves Town: Panic At The Disco

Given the radical image changes that Panic at the Disco has undergone in the past year, it's hard not to read the lyrics to its new album's opening song as a pre-emptive strike against critics.

"Oh, how it's been so long/we're so sorry we've been gone/we were busy writing songs/for you," bassist Jon Walker sings, by way of apology for the two-and-a-half-year lag between 2005's "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out" and the new "Pretty. Odd.," due March 25 via Fueled by Ramen/Atlantic.

Then, he launches into lines meant to comfort fans who have no doubt noticed that their favorite band now looks less like Queen and more like the Kinks: "You don't have to worry cause we're still the same band."

Lyricist/guitarist Ryan Ross describes the song as "a lighthearted way to make an important statement." But despite Ross' insistence that things in Panic-land are business as usual, the fact is, a number of things have changed since the band burst on the scene in 2005, resplendent in layers of makeup and surrounded by circus performers.

The band shed one member (bassist Brent Wilson) and replaced him with Walker. The members traded their Hedi Slimane-style black suits for vests, cravats and floral patterns.

And perhaps most crucially, they toned down the bombastic, glammy sound of their first record, replacing it with a stripped-down approach that, at times, recalls the Beatles and Bright Eyes.

But it was that bombastic, glammy sound that made them stars in the first place. And with Panic at the Disco's history being so tied to it, will it be easy to shed?

MAKING THE BAND

John Janick, president of independent label Fueled by Ramen, was introduced to Panic by Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz, who has his own imprint, Decaydance, through Fueled by Ramen.

"(Wentz told) me I had to come to L.A. to check out this new band that had contacted him online," Janick says. "I went and hung out with them, listened to some songs and signed them. At that point, they had never even played a show and were still in high school. We waited until they graduated, then flew them to (Washington) D.C. to make the record."

Realizing that he was dealing with a band that had almost no fan base, Janick sent it on the road with Fall Out Boy and set about coordinating an online campaign. Using sites like MySpace and PureVolume, both of which are popular with Fall Out Boy's key demographic, he started to build a grassroots effort, aligning the new band with the more established one.

The strategy seemed to pay off -- Fueled by Ramen shipped 15,000 copies of Panic's first record; 10,000 sold in the first week. Modern rock stations began spinning the band's songs, although the label didn't actively promote the record to radio. "I didn't want them to be thrown in everyone's faces," Jannick says. Instead, the band took its time and shot its first video, for the song "I Write Sins Not Tragedies."

That clip, an over-the-top production that featured the Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque, premiered January 17, 2006, on MTV's "TRL." The video was the first time many viewers saw Panic, and it was crucial in establishing the visuals that would be associated with the band. For the remainder of 2006, the band sold out theaters before embarking on an arena tour. The accompanying stage sets and visuals were splashy and intricate; shows featured ballerinas and acrobats, while Panic's members went through so much makeup that MAC Cosmetics offered to set them up with a supply of eyeliner in exchange for an endorsement.

They released a series of big-budget videos, again depicting the members as something straight out of the Moulin Rouge, culminating in the band taking home MTV's video of the year award for "Sins" in 2006. Two months prior, "Fever" had peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200, before being certified platinum a month later. To date, it has sold 1.67 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

INTO THE WOODS

After its banner year in 2006, Panic retreated to a cabin in the woods in early 2007 to begin work on its follow-up. Ross describes the initial effort as "a short story set to music. I was mostly working on it by myself, and while the other guys liked it, it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be."

Janick says the band did some rough recordings in April and May, but by June, it was clear that it wanted to change direction. "Those recordings are on the shelf," Janick says when asked if they would ever be released as B-sides or fan specials. "And because the quality of the recording isn't that great, they will probably stay on the shelf."

Wentz, who describes his role in the band's development as "Obi-Wan living in the desert," says he heard the lost record and that it sounded like "a bizarre musical about wolves. It felt a bit forced."

The death of that project, Ross says, "gave me a lot of insight. It became easier to move forward after that was done." Ross adopted the Beatles as his new role models for the next take on the second Panic album. "They weren't afraid to try things and do what they wanted to do," he says.

"We wanted to grow, and we were really over the circus theme at that point," he continues. "We went out in the woods and got new clothes and all grew beards. Jon and (frontman) Brendon (Urie) wrote songs for the record, and it became more of a band effort and less about me."

In the summer of 2007, Panic took the opportunity to try out new songs, performing them at several festivals around Europe. For a band whose garish live show had been its staple, it also took a risk by performing, as Wentz puts it, "wearing flannel shirts and jeans. They looked like they were coming out to do covers of the Band."

PUNCTUATION MATTERS

Performing looking like Pearl Jam circa 1993 was the band's first airing of its new self, and the next step it took was dramatic in its own way. After two years of being officially known as "Panic! at the Disco," the band removed the exclamation point from its name.

"We ruined a lot of MySpace names with that move," Urie says sarcastically. "You look silly now if your MySpace name is John! at the Disco."

The fans who haunt the band's MySpace and Facebook pages noticed the change and took to the forums to engage in some grammatically incorrect debates, with an even split between those calling the band a sellout and those writing off the minor change as harmless. Wentz compares the change to "when Kentucky Fried Chicken changed their name to KFC. At the end of the day, it's still chicken."

For the band, at least, the decision was seeped in meaning. "Dropping the exclamation point was our way of drawing a line in the sand," Ross says. "We have a new record and we feel like a new band. We were all tired of it, and we went ahead and got rid of it."

"This is going to be like when Kiss took of their makeup," Wentz says. "At the end of 2006, Panic had really just become too known for their look and the circus visual.

"As artists, they had to reinvent themselves," he continues. "Otherwise you hit a glass ceiling. When I signed them, Brendon was 17 and he didn't have much life experience. He came to see me in California and stayed up all night because he was so excited about not having his parents tell him to go to bed."

"I have spent time thinking about how our fans will respond to this," Ross says. "But a lot of them are close to our age, and they have also changed between being 18 and 22. I honestly believe our fans are going to grow with us. They will see that this is a natural evolution and not something calculated."

Noting that "it's important for us to reinvent our sound and our visual," Urie adds, "We were really young when we wrote the first record, and that teenage angst paid off well. But we are happy with the music and with the place we are in. In a weird way, this feels like another first record."

NME.com reviews Panic's new album - track-by-track guide of Pretty Odd

Panic At The Disco's new album - your track-by-track guide

We've had a listen to 'Pretty. Odd' at Abbey Road Studios in London, where the band recorded the strings.

It's due out in March, but here's our sneak preview.

NB: These song titles are subject to change.

1) 'We're So Starving'
A knowingly tongue-in-cheek introduction to the album – "We were busy writing songs for you… You don't have to worry/We're still the same!" sings frontman Brendon Urie –but, what with the Queen-esque multi-tracked vocals and bombastic backing track, one that sets the tone for what's to come all the same…

2) '9 In The Afternoon'
…Which is, essentially, 'Sgt. Pepper' had The Beatles taken a Magical Mystery Tour to the Bellagio Casino on Vegas' strip. This first single features clanking bells, fairground horns, lush orchestration, joyous handclaps and a vaguely lysergic lyric ("Nine in the afternoon / Your eyes are the size of the moon"). Moping emo rock this ain't.

3) 'She's A Handsome Woman'
The Beatles' references take a detour into 'Revolver' territory as Ryan Ross embellishes a tight-but-disarmingly off-kilter rhythm with George Harrison-esque guitar stabs and squeals.

4) 'Do You Know What I'm Seeing'
Idyllic birdsong, lilting, folky guitar lines and a nursery rhyme melody herald yet another stylistic curveball, as Panic come over all early-Pink Floyd and embrace eccentric English psych-pop. Yet another killer chorus is ushered in by swooning strings, rich vocal harmonies and a faintly nonsensical lyric: "I never gave a damn about the weather/But it never gave a damn about me". You can't but admire Panic's ambition.

5) 'The Green Gentleman'
God knows what the budget was for 'Pretty. Odd', but if it cost anything less than a million dollars to record, then the band have done well, because it certainly sounds it. This one sounds HUGE, as though Disney had decided to re-record 'High School Musical' with The Polyphonic Spree. Only infinitely better than that sounds.

6) 'I Have Friends In Holy Spaces'
Another shift of gears, as Panic adopt the personae of an old Mississippi river boat band, complete with banjo, clarinet and authentic scratchy period sound. The lyric, however, appears to be bang up to date, Urie seemingly struggling with the affects of fame: "You remind me of a few of my famous friends/Well, that all depends on what you qualify as 'friends'".

7) 'Northern Downpour'
Noticeably more traditional in structure that what's gone before, 'Northern Downpour' borrows heavily from classic American AOR bands - think The Feeling, but with the plastic veneer replaced with warmth and soul. Urie's surprisingly soulful vocals carry the tune to its gradual yet joyous crescendo.

8) 'When The Day Met The Night'
Given the all-encompassing nature of this album, it was surely only a matter of time before Panic dabbled in eastern-tinged melodies. What is surprising, however, is the way in which they subvert your expectation - again - by shoe-horning in another show-stopping showtune-esque chorus. Brilliant.

9) 'Pas De Cheval'
Arguably the most conventional song on the album, 'Pas De Cheval' starts with a cheeky nod to Neil Diamond's' 'I'm A Believer' before building to a chorus carved from '70s American FM rock radio. Will surely rule the airwaves if released as a summer single in the States.

10) 'The Piano Knows Something I Don't'
And then we're back on familiar ground as Panic plunge headlong into Beatles' territory for a bombastic '…Mr Kite' style collage of bells, brass and woodwind instruments, before slamming on the brakes for a psychedelic pastoral breakdown, complete with woodland sounds and lush vocal harmonies. Even on an album positively preoccupied with variations in pace and arrangements, this song stands out.

11) 'Behind The Sea'
And so the Panic TARDIS touches down in Haight Ashbury at the height of the Summer Of Love for a late-night love-in (and, indeed, Love-in – the spirit of Arthur Lee is much in evidence here). Panic's musical ADD soon kicks in, though, and with a 'Whooaah!' we're swept off into a Danny Elfman-inspired fantasy land for the song's second half.

12) 'Folken' Around'
Surely they're taking the piss now… A fiddle-inspired back porch country reel? Amazingly, it doesn't sound shit, either.

13) 'She Had The World'
Just when you thought there wasn't' a genre of music left for Panic to appropriate, they wheel out a harpsichord for a spot of stately chamber music (albeit more Muse than Mozart). Once again, the lyric is quite deftly juxtaposed with the music, Brendan singing a variation on the classic 'it's not you, it's me' get out clause: "I don't love you/I'm just passing the time/You could love me/If I learned how to lie/But who could love me?/I'm out of my mind".

14) 'From A Mountain In The Middle Of The Cabins'
You can't help but wonder what Panic's established fan base will make of their heroes' musical excursions. As evocative as this deceptively dark whirlwind of Dickensian strings and olde worlde ambience is, it's been some time since we last heard a guitar…

15) 'Mad As Rabbits'
Phew – here's one, now. Admittedly it's playing a tight-as-you-like '70s style funk motif, but there you go. The song eventually settles into another slice of classic Americana, albeit one peppered with a lyric about a "poor son of a chimney sweep" whose "arms were the branches of Christmas trees". There's just time for some more horn stabs, and another belter of a chorus, and then that's it.

If that all sounds like an astonishingly ambitious but potentially confusing rag bag of moods, genres and styles, then that's probably because it is. 'Pretty. Odd' will undoubtedly surprise and piss off Panic fans and haters alike, but it'll take plenty more playing to determine whether it's actually any good…

Panic At The Disco Explain Excised Exclamation Point: 'It Got A Little Bit Annoying'

'It was never part of the name to us,' guitarist Ryan Ross says of bygone punctuation.

You would think people wouldn't get this worked up over a single punctuation mark.

Then again, you're probably not familiar with the inner-machinations of Panic at the Disco fans.

To wit: On Thursday, Panic revealed that their new album would be called Pretty. Odd., bringing to end a solid month of speculation and message-board hysteria. Of course, they also unveiled a brand-new logo to accompany that new album ... one that did away with their much-maligned exclamation point. This, of course, shouldn't have been a big deal — the simple removal of a bizarre bit of punctuation — except it totally was, quickly becoming the most-discussed topic on fan sites around the world (sample missive: "u CANT take the *!* are u insane!").

It became such an issue that Panic (it feels so strange not adding a "!" after that) were forced to discuss the "exclamation thing" with MTV News following a press conference in Torrance, California, where they were announced as the headliners of the 2008 Honda Civic Tour. So, really, guys: What was the reason for dropping the "!"?

"At least for me, it got a little bit annoying to try to write that every time you're typing the name," guitarist Ryan Ross said. "It was never part of the name to us. ... People started writing it, and then it ended up in more and more things like that, so there it was. When we started doing new promo stuff for this album, we just told everyone not to use it anymore."

"We wrote it that way once, when we first started the band, and then ... people kept writing it that way, and it was a freakin' whirlwind," frontman Brendon Urie added. "We never made a big deal out of pulling it off the name. ... I mean, every time I write [our name], I never put an exclamation point in there."

So there you have it. The lack of an exclamation point is totally not a big deal (!). The band didn't even use it themselves (!). You don't need to freak out (!). Seriously (!). Calm down (!).

But while we're on the subject of punctuation-related shenanigans, let's talk about the album title, Pretty. Odd. It has, like, two periods in it. For no real reason. What's the deal with that?

"It just happened one night. We were working on a new song, and we weren't even talking about album titles, but it was just something I wrote down, and I brought it up to the guys," Ross explained "Like, Pretty. Odd. And then they all liked it, and that was a couple of months ago, so we just kept it since then."

"And it's more fun with punctuation," drummer Spencer Smith added.

Indeed, it is. Oh, and as for the Honda Civic Tour, it kicks off April 10 in San Francisco and runs until June 14 in Anaheim, California. (It will, presumably, leave the state of California at some point.) Motion City Soundtrack and Panic's labelmates the Hush Sound are also coming along for the ride, plus a fourth, yet-unannounced artist (mysterious!).

At the event, Panic unveiled their custom-designed Honda Civic (it had a hot-air balloon and several flowers painted on it ... for real) and played an acoustic set, featuring new songs "We're So Starving" and "Nine in the Afternoon," plus the debut of "When The Day Met the Night," a very Beatles-y tune, in which Urie sung lines like "When the moon fell in love with the sun/ All was golden in the sky/ All was golden when the day met the night" over a spirally, Abbey Road-era guitar line.

So it's fitting, then, that the band is on its way to London to put the finishing touches on Pretty. Odd. at the actual Abbey Road Studios. And the guys are totally pumped to be working in the Beatles' own haunt — just don't expect them to use any exclamation points to convey that excitement.

"I know that a lot of the gear that they used is still there," Smith said. "And being able to go there and actually use that stuff and sit in the same control room and live room that they did ... it's going to be a great experience, for sure."

Message from the Webmaster: Regarding the "!"

I never thought I'd ever make a post about a punctuation mark, but here we are. The ! is officially gone, I'm sure you all had time to mourn the loss of it by now.

I want to address the situation of the site from now on considering we're called P!ATD Online. The exclamation mark will obviously go away and a lot of things will have to be changed. However, I will not update everything to reflect the name change (spelling change, whatever) of the band. Descriptions, page names, things related to the site will be updated. Panic's information and projects will not.

What I mean is, everything you see with an exclamation mark is meant to be that way. I will not change anything to the new spelling when it was originally done the old way. Got it? It probably doesn't make any sense to you but it does in my head. The same applies to the gallery, journal entries and lyrics. If it's prior 2008, we'll be using the exclamation mark.

With writing Panic! as many times as I have since the site opened, I grew kind of attached to the exclamation mark and my fingers find it on their own accord when writing the name (you have no idea how many times I slipped these past few days). It's going to be really weird for a while.

I'm just making an announcement so you won't get confused when some things don't follow the new spelling rule. I'm also saving myself from emails complaining how I can't even spell the band's name right.

That is all.

Panic At The Disco Goes Coast-to-Coast in Eco-Friendly Fast Lane as Headliner of 8th Annual Honda Civic Tour - and more...

Honda Civic Hybrid Customized by Panic At The Disco to Be Won by Lucky Fan

Start your engines as Panic At The Disco leaves Sin City for center stage as headliner for the 8th annual Honda Civic Tour. American Honda Motor Co., Inc. announced the participation of the platinum-selling, MTV Video Music Award-winning band today at the company's U.S. headquarters in Torrance, Calif. The event featured the unveiling of the Panic At The Disco customized and autographed Honda Civic Hybrid and a surprise performance by the Las Vegas-bred quartet which was hosted by Honda Civic Tour alum Mark Hoppus of +44 and Blink-182.

The Honda Civic Tour (HCT) continues to provide fans with a unique, interactive concert experience, allowing them to get up close and personal with their favorite bands. Panic At The Disco (PATD) will take the stage with material from their highly anticipated sophomore album, PRETTY. ODD., the follow-up to 2005's A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. Advance word on the new disc promises songs particularly well suited to live performance, which Honda Civic Tour fans will be the first to confirm as the band brings their dynamic stage show to intimate venues throughout the U.S. The tour kicks off April 10th in San Francisco at the Warfield Theatre and will close with an unforgettable performance at The Honda Center in Anaheim, Ca. on June 14th. Full schedule, on-sale dates and support acts will be announced at a later date.

Over the past seven years nearly two million fans have enjoyed the HCT experience, and the tour has developed a reputation for putting fans first as an entertainment brand backed by Honda. The eighth year demonstrates the consistent annual commitment Honda has made to developing and supporting emerging music artists. This commitment will be demonstrated yet again with tickets priced for maximum affordability.

Said Panic At The Disco lead singer Brendon Urie: "We're taking advice from Fall Out Boy, who headlined the Honda Civic Tour last year, on how to make this year's tour even better. Those guys set the bar pretty high, but we're really looking forward to hitting the road again and are definitely up for the challenge." Guitarist Ryan Ross commented: "We were just kids when we went to see Good Charlotte and New Found Glory in Vegas during the '03 Civic Tour so it's pretty amazing to now be headlining."

Beyond great music, this year's Honda Civic Tour is also deploying an environmental action plan. In the tradition of the past three Honda Civic Tours featuring the Civic Hybrid, the '08 trek is aimed at effecting positive environmental change. New for this year, nonprofits Reverb (a leader in the "greening" of concert tours) and Global Inheritance (a champion of progressive causes with a tight connection to youth subcultures) have been selected by Panic At The Disco. They are collaborating to engage audiences in fun, fan-friendly, interactive exhibits during the tour. Additionally, this collective will make a substantial contribution to a cause to be determined by the end of the tour. The concept chosen will be selected on its merit to make a lasting impact on the generation-defining environmental movement in the name of the 2008 Honda Civic Tour with Panic At The Disco.

Tickets will equal action. For every Honda Civic Tour Panic At The Disco ticket purchased, $1 will go into a fund designated for non-profit tour partners Reverb and Global Inheritance. Being green does not get any easier than buying a ticket to the '08 Honda Civic Tour!

In keeping with one of the Honda Civic Tour's most exciting traditions, Panic At The Disco has designed a special, one-of-a-kind Honda Civic Hybrid to be showcased at each stop of the tour. Fans will have the opportunity throughout the tour to enter to win this green machine, which has been autographed by the band, making it the ultimate in HCT memorabilia. The PATD-personalized hybrid was unveiled to select Honda associates and the press at today's announcement event.

The most up to date HCT news can be found at
www.hondacivictour.com, and, on Jan. 30, beginning at 10 a.m. PST fans can register online to participate in a ticket pre-sale.

Panic At The Disco's platinum-selling debut, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out (Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen), spawned multiple radio and video hits, among them "I Write Sins Not Tragedies," which went to #1 on MTV and was named Video of the Year at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. The band has previously been featured on the covers of Rolling Stone, Spin and Alternative Press and is nominated for a Grammy in the "Best Boxed or Limited Edition Package" for A Fever You Can't Sweat Out at the upcoming awards ceremony taking place on February 10th.

Past Honda Civic Tour headliners include The Black Eyed Peas, Blink-182, Everclear, Incubus, Good Charlotte and New Found Glory, Dashboard Confessional, Maroon 5, and most recently, Fall Out Boy.

Produced by Marketing Factory, the Honda Civic Tour brings innovation and environmental consciousness to the masses by combining the hottest in automotive technology with the hottest in music.

! ( ALERT)

Most official websites related to Panic! At the Disco have updated the band's name on their pages to Panic At The Disco, sans exclamation mark. These websites so far are: Official MySpace, FBR, FBR+, FBR Webstore, FBR MySpace and Decaydance MySpace.

Which leaves fan wondering, has the band decided to change their name? Will this be a permanent change or just another album promotion tactic?

Pete Wentz Adds the Latest Piece to the Panic! at the Disco Puzzle - Word Puzzle Change

Last week, Panic! at the Disco released a snippet of what they told their fans was "something for all of your patience over the last year." The prize was a ninety-second clip from a new song called "We're So Starving" that the band admitted would "undergo some change" when they headed to Abbey Road Studios this month to finish their sophomore record, due in March.

Fast forward to yesterday, when Pete Wentz (who signed the over-the-top Vegas quartet to his Decaydance imprint) put up a blog entry in defense of his pals: "Not too sure that anyone gets that the new Panic! song is a joke," he wrote. "Sell me a sense of humor. The new record is different than whatever you are thinking." What led to Wentz's latest defense of the band? A chronology of recent Panic! developments (and a possible solution to the latest puzzle) after the jump.

01:01:08 - You Don't Have to Worry... - European Tour Dates

A new puzzle piece was added to PATD.com linking to the following blog entry on Panic!'s MySpace page...

Dear friends,
It's great to talk to you again. It has been quite a while since we have let you know what we've been up to. Recording over the last six months has been an amazing experience, and we couldn't be more excited to show all of you what we've been working on.

Over the next 5 days we will finish in the studio at home and make our way to Abbey Road Studios in London (which truly is a dream come true for us). There, we will record all of the strings, horns, whatchyamacallit's, and so on. Then, we will mix the record at Abbey Road as well.

But before we do all that, we wanted to give you something for all of your patience over the last year. So we've posted a rough version of a new song titled, 'Were So Starving' (it's at the last song in the player below). This is not the final mix or version of the song, and it will undergo some change while we're in London, but we wanted to show you something from what we've done so far. Hope you enjoy.

Until next time - Panic At The Disco
